Positive Impact Policy

Long-Term Environmental Perspective

Being an environmentally responsible organization means considering every impact generated by the operation. Montes is oriented towards a best practice and international standards approch, where the environment is considered an essential element for the development of its activities.

We have a clear focus on regenerative agriculture, understanding that soil is one of the fundamental factors for the development and production of agricultural systems. The growth and health of crops depends on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil, so our objective is to keep it alive and prevent its degradation.

We are part of the Wine, Climate Change, and Biodiversity Program @VCCBChile of the Institute of Environmental and Evolutionary Sciences of the Austral University of Chile, which aims to demonstrate the compatibility between biodiversity conservation and the development of the Chilean wine sector.

  • Emissions: In 2019, we calculated our carbon footprint using the Science Based Targets (SBT) methodology, committing to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% by 2030. In 2022, we emitted 1.74 KgCO2 pero 750 ml bottle, reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 44.5% since 2019.
  • Water: Since 2008, we have reduced our water consumption per hectare by over 50%, This is mainly due to the use of 100% technified irrigation and the use of technology to determine the water demands of plants, so we only irrigate what is necessary. In 2022, we consumed 0.13 m3 per liter of wine (processed); considering the consumption in agriculture, winery, and production.
  • Energy: Since 2021, we have been using 100% renewable electricity certified by I-REC. Additionally, we generate over 10% of solar energy from 612 panels, achieving and energy intensity of 0.7 kWh per liter of wine (processed).
  • Biodiversity: We are committed to conserving over 450 hectares of native forest and a significant area of biological corridors that allow the development of flora and fauna.
  • Composting and Grazing: We aim to monimize the use of chemical products, reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers by 30% due to the compost produced during the harvest season, which is then applied to the fields to improve soil structure. We also rely on the grazing of sheeps, llamas, and lams that feed on weeds.
  • Vegetative cover: 60% of our fields maintain vegetative cover between rows to reduce soil erosion and compaction.
  • Packaging: 100% of our packaging is recyclable or compostable. Our bottles, in average, are made with over 35% recycled glass, and up to 60% in Sparkling Angel and Montes Folly.
Wellbeing and personal development

We aim to build and maintain a value-based culture where our employeed are fundamental part of the organization. We promote a respectful and inclusive work environment that maximizes the skills of each worker.

Among our most relevant initiatives are:

  • Educational Completion Program: Since 2014, the company has provided the opportunity to pursue different educational levels, fro, 1st grade to 12th grade, allowing individuals to complete their studies. This benefit is available to both employees and members of the surrounding communities. A of 2022, over 120 employees have benefited from this program.
  • Inclusion and Diversity: We have a Diversity and Inclusion Policy that guides our action. Additionally, we have partnerships with local authorities to promote local employment opportunities and with the local penitentiary to support reintegration efforts, to date, more than 50 employees have worked with us. We also collaborate with the Special School of Santa Cruz, offering learning spaces, internships, and work placements.
